Aquarium Room Fish (Brainstorming thread for Episode 2 art assets)

Laura Posts: 149PCH Developer
A new call for art asset submissions is coming up TODAY, Tuesday, October 2nd... post your ideas in this thread to start brainstorming and getting feedback now!

The submission prompt will be: Draw, paint or collage a fish silhouette. Your fish should appear as a dark, shadowy shape, as though back-lit. Be creative, but leave the background of your image blank or transparent -- this makes it easier to incorporate directly into the episode! Submit your creation as a .png or .bmp file that is no more than 400 pixels in width or height.

Acceptable file types:
  • .png
  • .bmp

It started out as a silhouette and then went a bit wrong....

That fish is a class act.

His name is Gill. He's a tank manager (or some kind of fin-ancier).

A bit of uncle/nephew drawing time yesterday, after playing some rounds of frogz/gnomes (he struggled with the mouse clicking one, but we had hours of las0r frogz fun sharing the controls - mostly playing level 4/5 over and over and over).  They enjoyed the cartoons, though nephew 2 (aged 3) told us he was a bit scared by the maze of welcoming, and talk of decapitation...

Afterwards I asked nephew 1 (aged 5) for a drawing of a fish, which he was very eager to provide.  After then drawing one crab, I got 3 gnomes.  And it seemed very important to him to draw gud and bab gnomes that would fight each other.

    By Jake, aged 5.

Nice.  If you get it submitted, I'd lay down some votes on the goggly one with a propeller for a tail.

Is there a fishy vote coming soon? I've got parents (and grandparents) asking...

When you're trying to sell the experiment to new users they get all excited about using their first puzzle peices, but @Dave's "Keep an eye out for them in Episode 3!" news item makes me nervous that it's going to be another vote-dodger.

Because the fish are pretty easy to incorporate into the episode, we were planning to include as many as possible - so, no, no voting this time :(

We weren't' sure how many people would submit fish, nor were we sure how many we could fit into the scene, so we erred on the side of developers choice for this submission.

Several people have asked about voting for this round (and other dev choice rounds), so we're probably going to shy away from dev choice in the future.

:/  Cheers for responding anyway, Dave.

I know I should be pleased for all contributors involved that all entries get auto-included, but these 'developer choice' resolutions feel a bit like turning up at a football soccer tournament, ready for a day's competition, and all being told we can go home - we're all winners.  Here's a cup each for the ride back.

I guess I'll have to work on some (even) lower quality submissions for future, so the decision to put all entries through isn't quite such an easy one. ;)  That or drum up more submissions.  Yeah, maybe that's the more constructive action. :)

I don't particularly have a problem with the developer choice ones. Some entries are likely going to fit better than others and it seems unlikely that the voters would just happen to pick the 'correct' ones and not cause a whole bunch more effort for the devs.

I also don't have a problem with 'everybody wins'. I quite liked the way the decoration vote was handled. They will all get used but one will get extra visibility because it won the vote.

I quite like the idea that I'm somehow helping making the episodes rather than that I'm trying to 'win'.

    Wise words as always, @Werehare.

Ha, developers' choice means the developers get to choose, Noz! The submissions don't necessarily all get in. =P

But yes. We've been talking about this a lot lately -- this is part of what's motivated us to try opening up submissions to everybody. Even though the ability to submit your ideas and content is one of the perks of being a Creative Director, right now it seems like finding a way to get more submissions in is in everybody's best interests.
